The Environmentalist: a solution to Earth's problems
Ainan, as many of you know, is just seven years and three months, yet he has clearly observed the destruction of the Earth's environment, with growing puzzlement at Man.
Ainan is not impressed with an adult world that so casually destroys the only Earth we have. So, on the 23rd of February, 2007, Ainan quietly drew up a solution to the situation which, rather sadly, told me his view of the future of Earth.
He drew up a recipe for a new Earth.
In six pages, he noted what materials you would need and what you would need to do with them, to recreate the Earth and its' atmosphere. He drew the formation of the Earth in the manner he suggested and the multilayered atmosphere he wanted to make on top. He labelled the properties of each layer. It was quite a touching document to read.
Why is it that a seven year old can see that the Earth is in trouble - but all the world's leaders persist in being blind to it? Why does a seven year old understand that Man does not have the resolve to do anything en masse to protect the only Earth we have - so he proposes that another may have to be made, one day?
I would rather we were led by a child like Ainan, than a man like certain world leaders that could be mentioned. Although a child might be young in years, that does not mean they will also be short in vision - which so many leaders are.
I will keep his "Recipe for a New Earth"...and show him it when he is an adult. I only hope that by the time he becomes an adult, he can laugh loudly that he had ever thought such a thing was necessary. God forbid that he should receive it in sadness in a time when his prediction had already become true.
Let us leave a living, vibrant world for our children and grandchildren. Not a dead one that needs a child's replacement.

My sentiments exactly. What's happening to our earth today is really tragic. What's even worse is the fact that it's not even "happening" but that we're doing it! That is what angers and upsets me most. Most people I talk to about this simply shrug and act as if it's not their problem, which is something that I will never be able to understand...

Exactly! Humanity's major problems today are rather easy to solve, if the right people were put in charge. We are in a position to solve global warming, world hunger, and just about every problem that afflicts us. However, I don't think the world is prepared to implement the kinds of solutions I have in mind. Ainan's solution is nice, but I don't think the ability to create or terraform planets will come soon enough.
Half of the American population thinks global warming is a communist conspiracy! At least that's the impression I got while visiting a facebook forum. When a nation can't trust its scientists more than its politicians, something is terribly wrong. Have you heard of the carbon tax? Well now everyone wants to abolish it. One step forward and two steps back, hooray! It's things like this which make me doubt the effectiveness of democracy... but what better option do we have??
The sad fact is that the longer we wait, the more radical action will be needed to save the world. And then people would be unwilling to make the necessary sacrifices. Many people of religion believe the world is meant to end anyway.
Science was popular in the days of Einstein and the moon landings, but the development of ideas far beyond public comprehension along with the theory of evolution "debates" are making science very unpopular.
Strangely enough, destroying the Earth makes economic sense. I once read, from my undergraduate differential equations textbook no less, of a situation in which it's beneficial for the fishing industry to harvest the fish population to extinction. This is because profit made now is worth more than the same profit made many years into the future.
It is the economically correct way to take from the future. Make profit now and let everyone die later. I can hardly believe it! The capitalist system has great advantages and all, but if left unchecked, leads to a world where the future has no value and can be sacrificed to benefit the present population.
The UN Climate Change Conference takes place this December. Will real action be taken, or will our representatives effectively sign for us a suicide pact?
Any reasonably open-minded person can figure out how to solve global warming, but perhaps a great genius can think of a method which is politically viable. You have a scientist, a naturalist, and a social/political prodigy among your sons. If things continue as they are, they may find themselves with no choice but to confront the massive problem of saving the world.
