The boy who knew too much: a child prodigy

This is the true story of scientific child prodigy, and former baby genius, Ainan Celeste Cawley, written by his father. It is the true story, too, of his gifted brothers and of all the Cawley family. I write also of child prodigy and genius in general: what it is, and how it is so often neglected in the modern world. As a society, we so often fail those we should most hope to see succeed: our gifted children and the gifted adults they become. Site Copyright: Valentine Cawley, 2006 +

Fundraising drive: first donation received.

On January 2nd, I launched a fundraising drive to support my continued writing of this blog on giftedness and many other matters. Today, I am happy to announce, I received my first donation.

I would like to thank Tearsunderstars, a Singaporean, and regular contributor to the comments sections of my posts, for a donation of 50 US dollars. It is much appreciated.

As I noted in my introductory post, concerning the fundraising drive: http://scientific-child-prodigy.blogspot.com/2011/01/fundraising-drive-in-support-of-my.html

I am creating a list of top donors, so that everyone will be able to see, at a glance, who are the most generous donors and which country they are from.

As of today, Singapore stands in no. 1 position, in the world, for generosity and support of giftedness, thanks to Tearsunderstars. Thank you.

Should anyone else wish to support my writing which seeks to raise awareness of giftedness and its challenges, please donate by clicking on the gold donation button on the left hand side of this page. It will take you to Pay Pal, which is a perfectly safe and simple way to donate. Thanks.

A family "emergency".

As I walked through the TV room, on the evening of the 3rd of January, Fintan’s distressed, urgent voice assailed me:

“Daddy! Daddy!”, he said, quickly, strainedly.

Clearly, something was wrong: was he in pain?

“Ainan hit me…”, he continued.

I prepared to be riled at the “crime”.

“…last year.”, he finished, to his own evident amusement, for there was a little curl to his lips, as he said it.

What a joker. There is, in Fintan, seven, a wonderful whimsy, which comes out on occasion, often when least expected. He has his own way of thinking and seeing the world and, at times, is able to find humour in it. To my mind, this is a gift that is sometimes overlooked. Far more interesting to me, is the child who can make a joke like this, out of their own thinking and original impetus, than a child, for instance, who is intensely bookish and aces every exam. I rather think that the Fintan kind is more likely to lead an interesting life and make an interesting contribution, than the conventional, ideal child (from an Asian point of view, where bookishness is all). It is the power to be original, even whimsical, which sets people apart, in the end, when the sum total of their lives is done. For only those with some spark of it, in them, have the prerequisites to do something different with their lives. The Asian ideal student, is prepared only for a conventional life and outcome.

Thank you, Fintan, for this whimsical memory.

Power Balance and the dumb world of the 21st Century.

It is a good time to be an idiot, for one will never be without company in this dumbest of all worlds. Indeed, there is a new way to identify one’s fellow idiot. All you have to do is to look for a “Power Balance” bracelet on their arms. If they are wearing one, they are a definite idiot.

For those who have never heard of Power Balance or its bracelets, I shall explain. Power Balance launched a curious little product in 2007. It consisted of a silicone bracelet (a cheap material), with a hologram embedded in it (ie. a picture with some “3 d” properties), that, Power Balance claimed, “interacted with the body’s natural energy flow”. They further went on to claim that this totally inert, useless object, with no medical or technological properties at all, would boost the body’s “balance, strength and flexibility”. Exactly how an image was supposed to do this was not made clear. It should be noted, here, that there is no scientific means by which a hologram is going to be able to do any of the things claimed. It is just not possible. It is no more likely to turn you into a sporting superman than a photo of some random object. Furthermore, it is not clear whether “the body’s natural energy flow” has any real meaning, in the first place. Certainly, the “interaction”, of an inert image, with a meaningless “concept” is not going to do you any good, at all.

Oh, by the way, these bracelets retail for the astounding price of 29.95 USD. That to me, is an indicator of the level of intelligence of those who buy them: that they would pay so much, for so little, for, in fact, nothing at all. This price is actually quite useful since it allows us to gauge how many true idiots there are in the world. Sales of this product, or should I say “product”, were 35 million USD, in 2010, a steep rise from the 8,000 USD sold in 2007. Thus, Power Balance helped identify, for all the world to see, 35 million/29.95 = 1,168,614 total idiots, last year.

Now, I realize that my language is a bit strong, here. However, I feel that it should be. This is the 21st century. Basic science education is universal in the schools of the developed world (and most of the developing world). It should not be possible, in this era, to gull so many people, with a product that, plainly has no scientific basis at all. People should not be so gullible, when everyone receives basic science instruction. Yet, they are. This can only mean that they were not bright enough to absorb the basic lessons of their basic science classes. So, in fact, my strong language is not strong at all: it is a fair description of the mental calibre of anyone who actually falls for this, let us call it what it is, total scam.

It is very telling to consider the roll call of some of those who have been seen wearing these Power Balance bracelets. Seeing the names, prompted me to reevaluate my impression of some of them – and confirm my view of others. I will leave you to decide which category is which, for me. Famous wearers include Shaquile O’Neal, who is, apparently, utterly convinced of their magical properties, Robert de Niro and Gerard Butler. Clearly, whatever skill they might show in their respective crafts, these stars are not showing a high level of intelligence here, in falling for this particular ruse.

Just in case you are a believer in this magical product, I would like you to consider the admission Power Balance made, in recent discussions with Australian authorities who were concerned about the product: “We admit that there is no credible scientific evidence that supports our claims.”

There. That should be enough to kill that particular con. However, given the state of the world, I rather think that it won’t. It is more than likely that sales of Power Balance’s magical little holographic silicone bracelets will continue to rise. After all, they have only sold them to about a million idiots, in the last year. There are a lot more where they came from.

Indeed, on consideration, I would like to thank Power Balance for the public service they are doing, in labelling the world’s idiots, with such a readily identifiable mark, to save the rest of us the time needed to identify the idiots concerned through actual conversation. With the advent of Power Balance bracelets, one can now begin conversations at the appropriate level for the Power Balance bracelet wearer, thus sparing oneself those awkward conversational hiatuses that come when one has misjudged the level of company present and actually said something remotely challenging. Or, indeed, if you are a salesperson or anyone in business, you might choose to devote extra special attention to them. After all, they have proven that they will buy just about anything. Thus, it can be seen that Power Balance has completely failed to understand its own product. It is not a placebo effect masquerading as advanced technology at all. No. It is actually a social innovation designed to help people talk to one another at an appropriate level – and to smooth the course of business by marking out the most vulnerable customers. Pure genius.

The legend of Macaulay Culkin

Macaulay Culkin is famous, still, long after he has actually done anything to be famous for. Now, there is nothing wrong with that, since reputations often endure long after that which prompted them. Unusually, perhaps, though, compared to those others whose reputations have endured long after their cause (like certain pop/rock stars who no longer perform or compose, but still hit the gossip columns), Macaulay Culkin is famous because of what he did as a child. He is now 30. However, Macaulay Culkin has not been wasting his time, in his adult years. He has been dating Mila Kunis. I learnt this, today, on hearing that he had broken up with her.

Now the question is: what do you think people would be searching for, on hearing that Macaulay Culkin had broken up with Mila Kunis? Perhaps they might be asking questions like: did Macaulay Culkin have any children with Mila Kunis? Or: “Why did Macaulay Culkin break up with Mila Kunis?” Or “Did Mila Kunis dump Macaulay Culkin or vice-versa?” Or: “Did Macaulay Culkin cheat on Mila Kunis?”. Now these are all fair questions in the aftermath of the Mila Kunis breakup. However, that is not what interests people about Macaulay Culkin. Today, on my blog, the whole world is telling me just what they want to know about Macaulay Culkin. Rather astoundingly, fully 75% of searches arriving on my blog today, concern Macaulay Culkin. Yet, they are not searching about what you might consider reasonable, given his life events, today. Everyone is searching about Macaulay Culkin’s wealth.

The searches today, consist entirely of such humane gems as: “Is Macaulay Culkin rich?” “How much is Macaulay Culkin worth?” “What is Macaulay Culkin’s net worth?” “Is Macaulay Culkin wealthy?” “How much money does Macaulay Culkin have?” “Does Macaulay Culkin still have money?” “How does Macaulay Culkin make a living, now?” “What does Macaulay Culkin do for a living, now?” etc etc. Not one person, arriving on my blog, is interested in anything else about Macaulay Culkin, apart from his net worth/riches/wealth/money/assets.

To my mind, this does appear to indicate that people don’t think of Hollywood and its acting products, to be particularly meaningful. At least, the ones that Macaulay Culkin appeared in, don’t appear to interest them. No-one is interested in Macaulay Culkin’s acting achievements: they are only interested in the money they assume he got from them. No one is interested in whether Macaulay Culkin is an interesting guy, whether he is intelligent, sensitive, creative, caring, kind, loving, or anything else for that matter. All they care about is whether Macaulay Culkin is rich. Now, I don’t know whether Macaulay Culkin will ever read my blog (doubtful, given the vastness of the internet ), but if he does, I would like him to consider the evidence of my blog searches, and urge him to a certain caution, in his assessment of the character of those he meets. If he does not already do so, of course. For my blog suggests that most people, now, are only interested in one thing: Macaulay Culkin’s money.

By the way, for those interested in his supposed net worth, I saw an estimate a couple of years back saying he had 30 million US dollars to his name – so yes, he probably does have quite a lot of money. However, I am sure he has much else to recommend him too…so if you meet Macaulay Culkin, why not pause to find out what he is like as a PERSON and not a BANK ACCOUNT.

Personally, I find it rather disturbing that the interest in Macaulay Culkin should be so one dimensional. Of all the qualities a human being can have and which can inspire interest, the amount of money they have should be somewhere near the bottom of the list. To the modern net searcher, however, it seems to be at the top. What kind of world have we created that it should be so? What kind of people are there in this modern world of ours? Could they get any more one dimensional themselves? (I ask because a person reveals their depths, through the shallowness of their concerns.)

I wish Macaulay Culkin well on finding a new girlfriend – preferably one who does not search the internet for his net worth: poor rich guy!

Evoking memories of Ireland.

Today, the most unaccountable thing happened: I stepped out of my house, in Kuala Lumpur, into the depths of the Ireland, of my childhood. It was the most uncanny feeling. It is also one I shall explain.

When I left home, today, the light was subdued, the sky being heavily overcast, so that the customarily so-bright-you-have-to-squint light, had been muted, to a dull, comfortable grey. Not only that, but there was a light drizzle falling, teasing with the unkept threat of rain to come. Opposite my house, there is a verdant field, of a plush green. This simultaneous conjunction of green, drizzle and greyness, suddenly convinced some deeper part of myself, that I was in Ireland. It was so like my childhood memories of the place: the incessant drizzle, the overcast sky, and its dullness of light, surrounded by endless green, that tumbles on, as far as the eye can see. It felt, in that moment, so Irish, so characteristic of my childhood days – now very distant – in that green and moist land. It was the oddest thing I can recall feeling in many years. My body, at its core, was convinced it was in Ireland: all the cues were there, all the signs of that unforgotten land. If only I had not known, for a fact, that I was not there, I could have believed it with all of myself.

I was with Ainan, at the time – and I tried to explain to him what I felt and why I felt it. I tried to make him see what Ireland was like. He listened quietly, having no experience of the place. I realized, though, in trying to explain my sense of Ireland to him, that I needed to go there and show my children what it was like. I cannot let their childhoods pass without giving them some experience of the land that played such a part in my own upbringing.

Ireland was not long in Kuala Lumpur. An hour or two later, when I emerged from my University, the moment had passed: the sky was no longer so grey or dull, the light had brightened to its customary discomfort, the rain had stopped and the green was elsewhere. Yet, the reminder remained within me, echoing on. The message for me, is clear. I cannot forever remain in Asia, but must, some day return to Europe, even if only for awhile. Today, I had not gone to Ireland, but Ireland had come to me. There is meaning in that, it seems to me. Perhaps it is time, I returned and visited, once more – but this time, with a new family in tow. I wonder what they will make of it? I know this, however: should they visit, it will give them a sense memory, such as the one that today evoked for me. It will give them a memory that they, too, might one day recall, many years from today, when their father is old and their children are young. I have to give them that. It will give them a bridge not only to their own past, but to mine, too. Such a bridge is worth building: it is what ties us to whence we came.

Perhaps, when I am old, my children will speak of the time (s) they were in Ireland (and the UK). I will know, then, that they share some part of the world I grew up in. There is a beauty in that, a symmetry which those who reflect on life, can only find rewarding.

If I am still writing, then, I will tell of that day. To do so, will be to have come full circle, in a satisfying way. Until then, then…

Fundraising drive in support of my continued writing.

I have been blogging, now, for over four years and three months. In that time, I have written nigh on 1,500 posts and spent thousands of hours writing carefully considered posts, and replying, with equal consideration, to thousands of correspondents, from all countries of the world – and I mean all.

I realized something today about all of this: I have invested thousands of hours of my life, of my creative powers, of my thought and feeling, into this blog and into communicating my understanding of the world. That is a huge personal investment of mental and emotional energy. Now, I would like to point out something to you: all of this past four years and three months, there has been a gold donation button on this blog. It is quite easy to see, being gold on a black background and sits just beneath the description of this blog, on the left hand side. I am going to ask you to think, for yourself, and make an estimate of how much has been donated to me, in thanks for all my writing efforts, this past four plus years. In your estimation, you might like to factor in, the not inconsiderable 344,000 people who have visited my blog in all that time.

So, what proportion of that third of a million plus people might reasonably have donated something in support of my writing? Do you think 10%? 1%? 0.1%? How much do you think they would have donated each? 10 dollars? 100 dollars? More? Please factor all of these aspects into your estimate. Also take into consideration that my blog has many regular readers, whom it is clear, gain much pleasure and insight from reading my writings.

I would be very interested if you could post your total estimate, in the comments below…so be honest, don’t change it…and post it, please.

Well, how much, in total, do you think has been donated to me, to support of my writing of this blog, since the day I first began it? Please hold that number in your mind.

The answer is that the total donations, since I began writing, is precisely zero dollars and zero cents. Nobody has ever made a donation: not one, single person.

Now, personally, I found that result both startling and interesting for what it says about people. Generally, it seems, people are willing to take, and take abundantly, but not to give anything, tangible, in return. It also seems that people either do not understand the unremitting effort needed to sustain a blog like this – or don’t care to think about it. This was a sobering realization – and a little bit sad, too.

Interestingly, I asked Ainan, my son, to estimate how many people had donated, since the blog began – and he estimated that a significant proportion would have done so. He was more than a little surprised to learn that no-one had. I rather think that most people (correct me, below, if you think otherwise), would think that there would have been significant donations. Do let me know if you are as surprised as I was.

Part of the problem, I think, is that everyone probably assumes that “everyone else is donating, so there is no need for me to do so, as well”. Well, the fact is, everyone is wrong – no-one has donated, at all.

We live in a strange world. Everyone wants the products of creativity – but no-one wants to pay for them. There seems to be the belief that creative people don’t need to make a living. People seem to think that because a person writes, sings, acts, paints, composes, thinks, that they are able to support themselves and their creative activities, without an income. Well, sadly, that is just not so. Creative people need to eat too.

I have a family, as anyone who has read a few posts will know. I have three young sons, and a wife. I have, therefore, responsibilities to that family to spend my time in productive ways, that support that family. Expending thousands of hours on a blog that has never produced a cent in return, does not, upon reflection, seem the most productive way to spend my time, in support of my family. Granted, it does allow for self-expression…but, it has, to date, produced no tangible return. The benefit to others, through learning from what I write, is much greater than any benefit to myself or my family. Yet, that benefit has never been acknowledged by a donation.

Today, I have, therefore, decided to launch a fundraising drive, to support my continued writing of this blog. My writing is a creative work – and all creative acts should be rewarded with some financial return. If not, then the creative works must be created at the penalty of a sacrifice of personal income (because the time spent creating, could have been spent earning)…and that seems unfair.

If you have enjoyed my writing and/or believe that my mission to promote an awareness of giftedness and all the issues that the gifted face, in society, is a worthy one, deserving of support, then please donate by clicking on the gold button to the left of this page. Your donation will help allow me to continue my work in this cause, since it is becoming increasingly hard to justify to myself, given my family obligations, the thousands of hours I spend on my blog, without any financial return at all.

Donations may be of any size – any donation will be a help. Just reflect on what these past four and a quarter years of writing are worth to you. Reflect, too, on the value inherent in a blog that puts across the perspective of the gifted, through anecdotes, so that there might be wider understanding of all that is at stake.

In recognition of your generosity, in support of my continued writing, I am going to create a list of top donors, to be appended to the end of this post, initially. Should the list grow too long, I may create a separate blog post for it. If you would like your name to be on the list of donors, please mail me your name and, if relevant, company or organization (if they are involved in the donation), along with details of your donation. Alternatively, you can post details of your donation below. Please note, I will not put up the name of anyone who does not expressly give me permission to do so. It might be interesting if you could also include your nationality. I only ask this because it would be interesting to see if certain nationalities are more generous than others. It would also indicate which countries are more supportive of their gifted minority.

The top donors will be listed in order of size of donation with the greatest donation, and number one donor, at the top of the list. The amount donated will also be listed. At the end of the year, I will write a post detailing the total donated and my observations about any patterns of generosity (or lack thereof) around the world. Please get donating! Thanks.

Top Donors in support of my continued writing on giftedness.

1) Tearsunderstars (pen name) from Singapore. 50 US Dollars on 6/1/11.
2) Lee Li Jen, from Singapore. 20 US Dollars on 27/1/11

Thank you!
