The boy who knew too much: a child prodigy

This is the true story of scientific child prodigy, and former baby genius, Ainan Celeste Cawley, written by his father. It is the true story, too, of his gifted brothers and of all the Cawley family. I write also of child prodigy and genius in general: what it is, and how it is so often neglected in the modern world. As a society, we so often fail those we should most hope to see succeed: our gifted children and the gifted adults they become. Site Copyright: Valentine Cawley, 2006 +

The value of the unexpected.

For me, one of the most interesting qualities in a conversationalist, is the ability to surprise. It is what really grabbed my interest about my wife, when I first met her: she was constantly saying unexpected, unpredictable things, which I had never heard anyone say before. Until then, I had been accustomed to being able to predict basically what people were going to say next from the context of what they had already said: people were eminently predictable. My wife changed all that, by being eminently not so.

Ainan, too, has this quality of being unpredictable, though his unforeseeability has much more logic about it than my wife’s. I note that my spell checker doesn’t like the word “unforeseeability” – but I do, so it shall remain.

On Monday, 28th January, Ainan observed: “There is a point at which buildings are too tall to be dangerous. That is when it takes so long to reach the ground that scientists would have invented teleportation by then.”

I laughed. I liked the playfulness of this comment – and its unexpectedness. It is a quality of mind of much merit, to entertain thoughts that no-one else has had – and to do so, in good humour.

Ainan’s mind appears to be an interesting blend of my wife’s and my own. From me, he has his scientific intellect, and a tendency to entertain big ideas; from his mother he has a seasoning of artistic license. Ainan commingles the two, never failing to be logical but, at the same time, often succeeding in being absurd. I cannot decide whether he will become a great scientist or a humourist! Probably both...one who crafts darkly humourous scientific jokes!

Came across your post and comment and it was interesting food for thought for me at this particular juncture as I contemplate homeschooling for my child who has issues typical of gifted children. He's no prodigy, but a sensitive curious nature that I feel should be left to unfold at its own speed and without societal pressure.

As for Ainan, I don't know him/his family personally though he lives in my neighbourhood. But I feel sorry for him. Saw his father making him hold a rubrik cube and posing for a photo earlier today and Ainan had an do-I-have-to-do-this look on his face. I think his father, instead of spending all this energy churning out press release about his wunderkinder, should just pay more attention to the two younger children instead of leaving them to a maid who slaps them about and let them run bare-footed in the carpark. And you know, we've been in the same neighbourhood for the past four years, and the only time I've seen him smile was before all this publicity when he was a five-year-old.

To you, best wishes.

I am sorry to say it Alia, but you are either deluded, or completely mistaken.

Firstly, Ainan has NEVER taken a photo with a rubik's cube...never in his life. He does appear in a TV show with one in the background, but he has NEVER been in a photo, with a Rubik's cube. That never happened. Not only that but it certainly didn't happen today. You are either mistaking him for someone else...or are rather deluded. If you are the same Alia who has been posting negative comments for some years on this blog, anything is possible.

As for a maid "slapping our kids about": we don't HAVE a maid!

They don't run barefoot in any carparks.

Also, we can't have been in the same neighbourhood for the "past four years" because we have lived in three different neighbourhoods in that time period. Which neighbourhood are you claiming to have lived in?

Ainan is happy. He laughs at many things. It is very clear that you don't know Ainan, even at a distance...you don't know us and you don't know what you are talking about.

By the way, Ainan is not nine years old as you seem to think (4+5).

Either you have become convinced that someone else is Ainan, or you are deluded.

Let me know which it is by giving me the full details of where you think this Ainan lives, where you live and what you think you know of him and us.

Wow I don't want to get into this but I gotta say its pretty disgusting how people will do anything for attention, including faking knowing a family for four years. Seriously, focus on your own kid rather than trying to ruin the reputation of someone else's family.

I couldn't agree more Summer. Thank you for your supportive words.

Actually, I have found out since yesterday that this situation is even worse than it looks. This "Alia" has created a whole blog devoted to one subject: attacking our family. She is, if you like, a "blog stalker". I have never known the like before. It is more of an anti-blog than a blog and is filled with rather mad viewpoints that are completely at odds with what I know to be the truth of our family and the upbringing of our children.

Thank you.
